RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF GTRLC EFFORTS TO OBTAIN MEYER
PROPERTY ON SABIN POND FOR THE GRAND TRAVERSE NATURAL
EDUCATION RESERVE TO MAINTAIN CONTINUOUS QUALITY
WILDLIFE HABITAT AND PREVENT THE DESTRUCTION OF SAME .

WHEREAS, public lands are essential to the spiritual and
recreational needs of all of our citizens and affect
their health and well-being.

WHEREAS, population and development is rapidly
increasing in Grand Traverse and surrounding counties.

WHEREAS, quality wildlife habitat is rapidly decreasing
and is constantly under threat of development throughout
the region.

WHEREAS, places of natural beauty, inhabited by a
variety of wildlife, greatly enhance the quality of life
for all who live in and visit this region.

WHEREAS, the land surrounding Sabin Pond is replete
with natural beauty and excellent wildlife habitat and
is part of an extensive greenway that affords the
passage of wildlife from Airport Road to Beitner Road
Bridge area and beyond.

WHEREAS, Audubon surveys reveal that the Grand Traverse
Natural Education Reserve is home to a appreciable
number of wildlife species as well as serving as an
important way station for a significant number of
migratory species.

WHEREAS, this proposed acquisition will help to ensure
the excellence of its wildlife habitat, the natural
beauty and pristine quality of Sabin Pond and of the
Education Nature Reserve as well as contribute to
maintenance of water quality of the river, bay, and Lake
Michigan now and in the future.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the The Grand Traverse
Audubon Club supports any action that facilitates the
acquisition of the proposed Meyer property by the Grand
Traverse Regional Land Conservancy for the Natural
Education Reserve for the sake of preserving it as
wildlife habitat and public parkland in perpetuity.

Adopted this 30th day of August 2000 by the Executive
Board of the Grand Traverse Audubon Club.
